I am from Urdu Wikipedia and now I am going to start for Simple English version. Basically I am a translator and translate form English and Arabic to Urdu. I want to do the same for Simple English Wikipedia. Im looking for someone to contact me to help to start here. Thanks. Hmfs.ind (talk) 03:29, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Hmfs.ind: Welcome! What kind if help would you like? I would recommend reading Wikipedia:How to write Simple English pages to learn about the requirements here. If you have any other questions, please post at WP:ST instead of here. Thanks! --Auntof6 (talk) 03:41, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Link for the Cymraeg (welsh) wikipedia is wrong

{{editprotected}} At the bottom of the page, there are links to different Wikipedias. The link for the Cymraeg (Welsh) Wikipedia is incorrect. it should be cy.wikipedia.org Johnogwen123 (talk)

Queue

Could we have an automatic queue changer switching between the did you knows every week? This way the did you know section does not stay the same for a very long time. --Thegooduser Let's Talk! :) 🍁 00:22, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

We do have a queue, but the problem is we don't have people creating DYK hooks very often, so they are left the same for a longer period on purpose so we don't run out of hooks. It is not uncommon for us to leave them the same for a couple months (sometimes more than 6). The solution if you want them changed faster is to start suggesting hooks. We have only had 11 suggested in the last two years. Because Hian switched the queue last time you asked we are now out of DYK hooks except those 11 I mentioned earlier which haven't yet been approved. So if you want newer hooks we need more otherwise we will be on these ones for a good period of time. -DJSasso (talk) 11:26, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I might note that a new queue was made on May 20 with 5 hooks that had been approved. (Made by FR on May 20 by pulling the approved ones off of the suggestion page). It would seem to be ready to be rotated on to the main page. There are also 18 hooks on the suggestions page waiting for approval or disapproval. (Granted I submitted 3 just now so it was less earlier today). I would think out of those 18 we can probably get at least 5 approved to build the next queue after the one I linked above. But I am also happy to keep suggesting more hooks regularly. The issue is that current policy seems to limit the suggestions to 4 hooks at a time per editor. Maybe we should consider removing that limit? If so I'll suggest more...just trying not to break the rules. Desertborn (talk) 14:17, 21 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Also Queue 4 and Queue 5 have hooks. But I remember someone saying they were not approved yet. Should I move them back to the suggestion page so they can be reviewed and approved? Desertborn (talk) 14:43, 21 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
DJSasso, I'd be happy to make some more dyk's. --Thegooduser Let's Talk! :) 🍁 20:55, 15 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Pinging @TDKR Chicago 101: and @Hiàn: in case you want to comment. Desertborn (talk) 14:43, 21 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think at some point Vermont brought over an enwiki admin familiar with en's infrastructure at some point (see Wikipedia:Simple_talk/Archive_124#Status_of_DYK) so we could very well set a slower rotation (two weeks per queue maybe?) and ramp up DYK work significantly.
I know in the past the hook restrictions were put in place due to one editor clogging up the DYK process and I'm not suggesting they be removed, but I'm thinking easing these restrictions to get more through might be beneficial. Hiàn (talk) 15:30, 21 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah we can probably ease up on them a bit, I don't think anyone would have a problem with that unless it becomes all one person again. But yeah really we are heavily reliant on DYK creation if people want to see it rotated more than every few months. -DJSasso (talk) 17:29, 21 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Weight vs Mass

The Wikipedia page https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_of_measurement in it's opening dialogue comparing the major systems of measurement mentions that in the metric or SI system that the kilogram is a unit of weight. This is incorrect - the kilogram is a measure of mass. Further down the article it does say the kilogram is the unit of mass in the metric system but goes on to say "the kilogram weighs..." and "1 gram (g) is the weight of...". Lastly I note that in the Converting Between Systems section under Mass it gives conversions of ounces and pounds to grams and kilograms. Clearly the writer does not distinguish between mass and weight and treats them as though they are the same thing. p.s. The metric system or SI does not have a base unit of weight - one would use a compound unit such as a Newton (1 kg*m/s^2) to measure weight. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.229.10.238 (talk) 21:31, 11 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Instead of "If you need help, you may ask questions at Simple talk..." Should it be "If you need help, you can ask questions at Simple talk..." ? --Thegooduser Let's Talk! :) 🍁 21:08, 11 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Either one seems fine to me. One means ability, the other means permission: either applies. --Auntof6 (talk) 08:23, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It seems a little complex, shall we go striaght to the point (i.e. "If you need help, feel free to ask us at ST" or even more to the point "Ask us on ST if you need any help?"). --Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 08:53, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In the first question, the phrase "feel free" is probably complex. A question in the form of your second suggestion may be ambiguous: is it saying 1) if you need help then ask on ST or 2) if you want to know whether you need help (such as, whether the community feels that you need help because there are problems with your work), then ask at ST. --Auntof6 (talk) 10:01, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How about "If you need help or you have questions, you can ask at WP:Simple talk." The shortened " Need help?" and "Have any questions?" aren't the way English learners learn to form questions, so it might confuse them. --Auntof6 (talk) 02:23, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mobile main page special casing will be disabled July

Per phab:T254287, mobile special casing will be disabled in July. This means the Main Page will look like this on phones (reduce your browser window or use devtools to simulate what it would look like on a phone). I've created User:BrandonXLF/sandbox with modified version of the Main Page that uses User:BrandonXLF/styles.css for styling, making the page easier to edit and smaller in size. This version is mobile friendly and no longer requires Template:Main Page subpanel and Template:Main Page panel. You see how it looks on desktop by going here and how it looks on mobile by going here. To use this version you would have to:

  1. Copy the contents of User:BrandonXLF/sandbox to Main Page
  2. Move User:BrandonXLF/styles.css to Main Page/styles.css
  3. Replace User:BrandonXLF/styles.css with :Main Page/styles.css in the code from User:BrandonXLF/sandbox

There a few differences between the pages visually (although they are very minor), please ping me if you have any issues with the code or the presentation of the new page. - BrandonXLF (talk) 04:03, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Djsasso: You seem to be the last person who edited the Main Page, can you implement these changes? - BrandonXLF (talk) 21:29, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"Use Basic English vocabulary and shorter sentences. This allows people to understand normally complex terms or phrases

Should read, IMO:

Use simple English words and write short sentences. This helps people understand words and sentences that would be difficult if you write in a complicated way.

Just my two cents.

Change: Use Basic English vocabulary and shorter sentences. to: Use Basic English words and shorter sentences

{{editprotected}}

This is simple English so it should use as little jargon as possible, many non-native English speakers have no idea what "Vocabulary" means and with good reason, I did not learn the word Vocabulary until I was in 8th grade, and for readers who want understand clear, direct and sharp wording they probably wont like the wording. The main argument against would be that "Vocabulary" is a more descriptive word then "Word" but the definition of Vocabulary according to Marian Webster is "a list or collection of words or of words and phrases usually alphabetically arranged and explained or defined", so the main difference is word means any word and vocabulary means a list of words usually in alphabetical order, the difference is minimal and people will be able to understand it all regardless.

Lots of people wont know what vocabulary means, and is not as understandable or direct as words. I therefore think this would be a positive change. Vallee01 (talk) 22:28, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Except, of course, that the simple English vocabulary itself has inbuilt weaknesses, and those weaknesses tend to be in the sciences and technologies. Macdonald-ross (talk) 16:15, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I need a ASAP Correct answer to a very simple question about Wikipedia PLEASE- How can I do this...in Wikipedia? PLEASE EMAIL ME ASAP AY HEART RATES ARE RISING BY THE MINUTE!!

Hello from Cyprus to everyone - everywhere!! I’m Pari and this is my first attempt with Wikipedia as an author for a subject I’ve been researching for years now! I decided to share my research with the world so I want to publish it WHEN IS 100% FINISHED/EDITED but.....

I have just created an account and I began the transferring from my real writing on a paper, by Typing from the beginning everything a I have on my Real Paper written Research. I’m still on the 1st page. And this is my exact problem!! What I am writing is not even close to Finishing inside Wikipedia or in any other Application for writers like for example Microsoft WORD or so so many other Apps that exist out there!

Therefore since it is NOT EITHER CLIAE TO BEING READY FOR PUBLISHING IN WIKIPEDIA ( or anywhere else for that matter ), HOW CAN I JUST SAVE WHAT I DID SO FAR?? The only thing I see is a Blue Button saying PUBLISH and I can’t see anything or anywhere like a SAVE Button!! First of all, is there a SAVE Button or I have no choice other than to PUBLISH for the eyes of everyone, of what I wrote so far in the 1st Unfinished Page of my Subject??

Maybe it is supposed to be like this? Is Wikipedia an Application that has NOTHING SIMILAR TO DO WITH Microsoft WORD?? Is Wikipedia an Application that you simply POST ANYTHING THAT IS READY TO BE READ BY OTHERS? So my question is very simple and I am sure that someone from all of you will know the answer.

HOW CAN I JUST SAVE AS A FILE IN WIKIPEDIA, SOMETHING THAT I HAVE WRITTEN BUT IS BY NO CHANCE EVEN CLOSE TO PUBLISHING YET?

SINCE IT NEEDS A LOT OF WRITING AND EDITING before I can officially Publish it, WHAT CAN I DO FROM NOW ON - SINCE I VE HIT THE PUBLISH BUTTON THINKING THAT IT WOULD ASK ME IF I REALLY WAS READY TO PUBLISH OR IF I JUST WANTED TO SAVE MY FILE FOR NOW??? Does any of you kind people know how to proceed WITHIN the Wikipedia.org ( meaning not having to copy EVERYTHING I HAVE WRITTEN SO FAR and Finish it by importing my words into another Writing Application like for example Microsoft WORD or so so many others that exist out there! Is that possible first of all? Can I “PAUSE MY WRITING” in Wikipedia “BUT WITHOUT HAVING IT PUBLISHED AND CONTINUE WERE I LEFT THE NEXT DAY AND THEM CONTINUE AGAIN AFTER A WEEK OR SO BUT WITHOUT PUBLISHING IT UNTIL ITS FINISHED???

I’m not well familiar with Wikipedia so I would so much be obliged to the person who will solve this for me, if they emailed me at (Redacted)

Thank you so much in advance My best regards and love from Nicosia / CYPRUS

Pari Mele we don’t publish research papers here. There are websites specifically for that. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. You can use Wikiversity to publish learning materials. Thank you! Nigos (talk · contribs) 05:09, 23 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Pari Mele: I agree with Nigos' comment above. Wikipedia is not a blog. And your user page is not a "journal". It is simply a place to briefly tell us a little about yourself (which you did at the end of it). Original research is not allowed. You are in the wrong place. Folks, while you were fully correct I think you were not nice to this new user. IMO you could have said something like:
<a few welcoming words, then:> We're happy you have found Wikipedia and would like to help you find the right place for what you want to do. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. <briefly explain> This means that it is different from a site where you can publish. <... all the other good factual advice from what you wrote.>

Inaccurate information on main page

I've found some inaccurate information on the main page as well as on the portals. It says Biology (Plants and Animals) though on the English (the main) wiki, it is described differently. Also, we all know that Biology isn't only plants and animals. I would have edited it but... admins only I guess.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Elytrian (talkcontribs) 06:57, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I found that the Biology portal on the main page is labeled (Plants and animals). If you know anything beyond a basic education's worth of knowledge, this is kinda inaccurate. I'd like some admins to change this to '(Living things)' or something more appropriate. Elytrian (talk) 07:01, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You already know— Preceding unsigned comment added by Elytrian (talkcontribs) 14:03, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It's not really inaccurate, it is just not as detailed as you would like because we are Simple Wikipedia. Once a reader clicks on the link they are taken to a page that will explain it in more detail. -Djsasso (talk) 20:06, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Djsasso It is really inaccurate; biology is not limited to plants and animals. "Living things" would really be much better. There is a difference between simplifying and obfuscating. GPinkerton (talk) 10:51, 22 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Djsasso: What he said, plus plants and animals completely misses biochemistry. Elytrian - Talk 11:04, 22 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Our main page Biology says: "Biology is the science that studies life, and living things, and the evolution of life. Living things include animals, plants, fungi (such as mushrooms), and microorganisms such as bacteria and archaea.". How is that wrong? Macdonald-ross (talk) 08:41, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request for addition of name for religion

Please add Sanamahism in the list of religions mentioned in the main page. Haoreima (talk) 16:29, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Haoreima: I think we have enough religions listed there; it isn't meant to be a list of all religions. If you look at List of religions, you'll see there are many others that aren't listed. --Auntof6 (talk) 17:50, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6:Not putting every thing in the main page is ok. But denying or neglecting a requested one, without proper reason, isn't ok. I think so. Haoreima (talk) 04:44, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, here's a reason: the religion is not well enough known, and in any case is a version of Hinduism. The whole point of intro pages is not to list everything every editor is interested in. Macdonald-ross (talk) 08:49, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't say it as a version of Hinduism, if you don't know well about that particular religion. It will make it look like an insult or disrespect to that particular faith. Please don't give comments in the topics you don't know about. Every religion in Indian subcontinent aren't Hinduism. Just only comment on the reason to decline the topic's inclusion in the mainpage of wikipedia. Thanks! May God bless you! Haoreima (talk) 12:45, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Categories link in header

In the main page header there is a link called ‘categories’ which links to Special:CategoryTree/Project. However, this ‘project’ category does not exist. I wonder if it is supposed to be the category ‘Contents’ so could an admin change the link to Special:CategoryTree/Contents. Thanks, DigitalChutney (talk) 16:25, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

No that is the correct link, its meant to link you to the search for category trees. If you enter in a category it will give you the tree for that category. But the project part of the link is unnecessary to do that, its just filler. I have removed it to make it function better. -Djsasso (talk) 18:43, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The Cebuano Wikipedia probably doesn't have 5m articles

Under the other languages section, it lists Cebuano as having at least 5,000,000 articles, along with only English. This doesn't seem accurate, as if you visit the standard English Wikipedia, it doesn't list Cebuano in the 1,000,000+ articles section. FamiliarFlareon (talk) 06:19, 29 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@FamiliarFlareon perhaps the list in standard English is incorrect, as the statistics from meta and Cebuano Wikipedia itself puts the wiki at 6,000,000+ articles. -- *Fehufangą✉ Talk page 06:27, 29 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Many examples on our introductory pages are taken from C.K. Ogden's work a century ago. If a word or phrase has become well-known more recently it may be appropriate to use it. One would have to test people to find out whether "include" actually does cause a problem. The "About Wikipedia" section has not been revised recently. I do not propose any changes, but I would not stick to it religiously. Macdonald-ross (talk) 08:57, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Upcoming vote on the revised Enforcement Guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct

You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki.

Hello all,

In mid-January 2023, the Enforcement Guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct will undergo a second community-wide ratification vote. This follows the March 2022 vote, which resulted in a majority of voters supporting the Enforcement Guidelines. During the vote, participants helped highlight important community concerns. The Board’s Community Affairs Committee requested that these areas of concern be reviewed.

The volunteer-led Revisions Committee worked hard reviewing community input and making changes. They updated areas of concern, such as training and affirmation requirements, privacy and transparency in the process, and readability and translatability of the document itself.

The revised Enforcement Guidelines can be viewed here, and a comparison of changes can be found here.

How to vote?

Beginning January 17, 2023, voting will be open. This page on Meta-wiki outlines information on how to vote using SecurePoll.

Who can vote?

The eligibility requirements for this vote are the same as for the Wikimedia Board of Trustees elections. See the voter information page for more details about voter eligibility. If you are an eligible voter, you can use your Wikimedia account to access the voting server.

What happens after the vote?

Votes will be scrutinized by an independent group of volunteers, and the results will be published on Wikimedia-l, the Movement Strategy Forum, Diff and on Meta-wiki. Voters will again be able to vote and share concerns they have about the guidelines. The Board of Trustees will look at the levels of support and concerns raised as they look at how the Enforcement Guidelines should be ratified or developed further.

Turkish Wikipedia

Hello. The number of articles in the Turkish Wikipedia is greater than 500K, however, it's shown among the wikipedias that have 100K+ articles. Can this get updated? Wiki6421 (talk) 11:30, 14 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Chechen, Czech, Hungarian, and Turkish should be moved to 500K+, and Afrikaans and Ladin (not to be confused with Latin) should be added to 100K+. Lights and freedom (talk) 20:13, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I'm not sure that the 5,000,000+ row is really necessary. It's only English and Cebuano, which is mostly bot-generated stubs. Lights and freedom (talk) 06:34, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Fehufanga Could you update this? Lights and freedom (talk) 05:54, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This is the Wikipedia page for Simplified English. It has been started as a response to the need for English learners and English teachers for reduced-complexity, free readings for use in the classroom, computer activities, and so on. It is suggested that articles be taken from the regular wikipedia and simplified using only the 1000 most common words in English and less complex grammatical structures. (Or to conform to a certain skill level in one of the standard indices.) Of course, original submissions are also welcome--in that case, they could be submitted both to this and to the main wikipedia. 2601:644:907E:A450:9807:779E:404C:33ED (talk) 16:22, 1 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
